CHURCH EMERGENCY ALERT SYSTEM
A CASE STUDY
Wireless Emergency Alert System for the
Cathedral Church of Saint John The Divine

THE CHALLENGE
The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine, located in Manhattan, New York, is one of the largest cathedrals in the world, offering daily services, sacraments, and pastoral care. To strengthen safety and communication across its 120,000-square-foot facility, the church required a reliable on-premise Church Emergency Alert System.
The objective was to implement a robust emergency communication solution that could support established security protocols and protect visitors, clergy, and staff during critical events such as intruder threats, active shooter incidents, medical emergencies, or evacuations. The Church Emergency Alert System needed to ensure dependable, facility-wide coverage with the following essential capabilities:
THE SOLUTION
Visiplex's wireless church emergency alert system was implemented at the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine with a central wireless paging base station with SMS messaging capabilities, installed at the security desk. The system integrates wall-mounted and wearable wireless panic buttons strategically placed throughout the cathedral, providing fast and reliable emergency activation when needed.
To deliver clear communication during critical events, the church emergency alert system includes a network of wireless audio-visual PA speakers installed in key areas across the 120,000-square-foot facility. This ensures comprehensive voice coverage and effective emergency messaging for staff, clergy, and visitors.
For enhanced visibility and ADA compliance, the system features modern wireless PA speakers with integrated LED message boards and multi-color beacon lights. These provide bright, facility-wide visual alerts for emergencies, ensuring accessibility for all individuals.
Every component of the church emergency alert system is equipped with built-in battery backup, guaranteeing uninterrupted operation during power outages and maintaining critical emergency notification capabilities.
In emergency scenarios, the system enables live voice paging with real-time instructions or automatically broadcasts pre-programmed emergency alerts tailored to specific events such as intruder threats, active shooter incidents, or lockdowns. For daily operations, it supports routine overhead announcements, synchronized time display on LED boards, and internal alerts to improve staff communication and visitor coordination.
Thanks to its modular and fully wireless design, the system was installed by in-house maintenance staff, minimizing installation costs. Visiplex technicians completed final testing, commissioning, and on-site staff training to ensure seamless operation and long-term reliability.
THE RESULTS
Optimized Wireless Church Emergency Alert System Performance – The wireless audio-visual emergency alert system was successfully implemented across the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine, significantly enhancing facility-wide safety, emergency readiness, and real-time communication with staff and visitors. This fully integrated solution improved operational efficiency while delivering the following key capabilities:
