INDUSTRIAL EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION SYSTEM

CSX Corporation, a leading U.S.-based freight transportation company with a vast rail network, required a robust industrial emergency notification system to enhance employee safety across 27 large rail yards, each spanning 3 to 5 miles. The goal was to implement a facility-wide mass notification solution capable of addressing specific emergency scenarios with reliable, full-site coverage. The system needed to deliver dependable performance across each rail yard with the following core capabilities:

Visiplex’s industrial emergency notification system was deployed across all 27 CSX rail yard facilities, each spanning several miles, to enhance emergency preparedness and improve site-wide communication. The system featured a primary wireless paging base station at each location, monitoring multiple zones and enabling rapid activation of facility-wide alerts.

Each rail yard station was equipped with four wall-mounted wireless pull-down panic buttons, color-coded (Red, Blue, Yellow, and Black) to correspond with specific emergency types, Fire, Security, Severe Weather, and Hazardous Conditions. When activated, each button triggered an instant, site-wide audio-visual alert that included a wireless PA speaker playing a pre-recorded, event-specific voice message, along with synchronized activation of color-coded beacon lights. This ensured high-visibility alerts even in noisy environments and supported ADA compliance for hearing-impaired personnel.

To enhance weather preparedness, each paging base station was also integrated with a NOAA digital weather radio receiver, enabling automatic system activation during critical weather events such as tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, or high-wind alerts.

All system components featured built-in battery backup, ensuring uninterrupted operation during power outages or grid instability—crucial for maintaining emergency communications under any condition.

In addition to emergency use, the system also supported daily public address paging for internal communications, announcements, and operational coordination across each rail yard.

CSX partnered with an experienced electrical contractor to install the fully wireless system across all 27 rail yards with minimal operational disruption. Final system testing, commissioning, and on-site staff training were conducted by Visiplex technicians, ensuring seamless system integration and long-term reliability.
