INDUSTRIAL WEATHER ALERT SYSTEM

A CASE STUDY

Wireless On-Site Weather Alert System for
Honeywell Intelligrated Manufacturing facilities

Industrial Weather Alert System

THE CHALLENGE

Honeywell Intelligrated, a leading single-source provider of automated material handling solutions for retailers and manufacturers, required a robust on-site weather alert and emergency paging system for four of its manufacturing facilities located in St. Louis, MO; Mason, OH; Danville, KY; and London, OH. The goal was to implement a scalable weather alert solution capable of supporting both daily voice announcements and real-time audio-visual severe weather and other emergency alerts to enhance operational communication and employee safety. Each facility’s emergency weather alert system needed to provide reliable, facility-wide coverage with the following core capabilities:

  • Site-wide live voice paging for delivering real-time emergency instructions and event updates
  • Wireless indoor and outdoor PA speakers to ensure full audio coverage across all buildings and outdoor zones
  • Automated severe weather alerts via real-time integration with NOAA weather radio for local storm, and tornado notifications

  • Panic buttons placed throughout the facility, to allow staff to trigger emergency alerts during critical situations

  • LED message boards and multi-color beacon lights for enhanced visual alerting and ADA compliance
  • Full system power backup, maintaining operation during outages caused by an unstable regional power grid
  • Modular, scalable architecture that allows future system expansion without the need for costly rewiring

THE SOLUTION

Industrial Weather Alert System

Visiplex’s wireless industrial weather alert system was implemented across multiple Honeywell Intelligrated manufacturing facilities using a centralized wireless paging base station strategically located at each main office. Each base station was fully integrated with a NOAA digital weather radio receiver, enabling real-time severe weather alerts based on local emergency conditions.

In addition to automated weather alerts, the system monitored multiple color-coded, wall-mounted wireless panic buttons placed throughout the facility, allowing staff to instantly trigger facility-wide emergency alerts during critical situations.

The solution included a combination of audio-visual indoor PA speakers, each equipped with LED message boards and multi-color beacon lights, and wireless outdoor PA horn speakers paired with beacon lights in key outdoor zones such as break areas, smoking zones, and parking lots. These devices provided high-visibility alerts to enhance response times and maintain ADA compliance.

During routine operations, the system was also used to broadcast scheduled shift change announcements and break bell alerts, while LED message boards displayed synchronized time and important internal communications across the facility floor.

Thanks to its modular wireless design, the Visiplex industrial weather alert system was installed by Visiplex technicians at one facility, and by trained in-house staff at three additional sites, without the need for complex wiring or infrastructure changes. Final system testing, commissioning, and on-site staff training were completed by Visiplex technicians to ensure reliable, seamless operation across all four facilities.

THE RESULTS

Optimized Industrial Weather Alert System Performance – The wireless industrial weather alert system was successfully implemented across all four Honeywell  facilities, significantly improving site-wide safety, operational efficiency, and communication. The solution enhanced daily workflows and emergency readiness while delivering the following key capabilities:

  • Live public address voice announcements can be initiated facility-wide from the main office base station

  • Enhanced visual alerts using LED message boards and beacon lights, ensuring ADA and hearing-impaired compliance

  • Customizable, multi-lingual, pre-recorded voice messages for diverse workforce communication
  • Wall-mounted wireless panic buttons allowing staff to instantly trigger facility-wide emergency alerts
  • Full backup power support for all system components, ensuring uninterrupted operation during power outages
  • Modular, expandable system design allowing quick addition or relocation of components without new wiring
